Astro Coffee on Michigan Ave. in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit is fresh, exciting and refreshing. Both the coffee and the food!
Astro Coffee is a great quick stop (or long break) for a selection of robust roasts from around the country. The team at Astro Coffee selects coffee beans from right around the corner and as far away as California. Products served at Astro are cultivated and produced in Michigan, natural and organic whenever possible and of course delicious. Unfortunately, the day I stopped in for a cuppa joe it happened to be way too hot outside to consider a steaming mug of delicious coffee. So I went with the iced mocha and a grilled vegetable and hummus sandwich. Both were delicious treats; light and refreshing, a theme that resonates from the cafe itself.
The entire experience at Astro was quite refreshing. The design of the coffee shop was hip and welcoming. From the art hanging on the walls to the walls that were chalk boards for the creative types, it is nice to a coffee shop with some attitude and personality near downtown Detroit. Even though it is a little bit of a hike if you are working or living downtown, Astro has enough character to justify the journey. Definitely worth checking out whether you are interested in exciting new businesses in Detroit or you are just looking for a fun diversion.
Astro turns a year old on July 12, 2012. As of June 29th, they had not decided exactly how to celebrate the occasion, but look for more posts on their
blog in the near future. I really enjoyed my stop at Astro Coffee and I definitely recommend stopping by any time it might fit in your schedule.
*(I apologize for the hipster jab, but the people at the coffee shop may have set the world record for most wool hats ever worn on a 90 degree day.)
